Laura's Birthday Hike, July 2008 - We took a short hike through the Pogonip Preserve, up to the lime kilns, then back along the main road and picked blackberries that were ripening nearby.

Midland, TX to San Jose, CA, January 2008 - My long day of travel from Midland, TX to San Jose, CA. I was delayed for six hours in Midland due to fog in Dallas (where I switched planes). When I arrived in Dallas my connecting flight was late by four hours. Since my original connection was 2.5 hours I had a half-hour to get to the other side of the airport to make the San Jose flight, but my checked baggage didn't make it. It was delivered to my home the next morning by a courier.

Peters Creek, September 2007 - David, Ron, Alice, and I started our hike from the Portola State Park HQ. We climbed up the service road to the Summit Trail, then climbed the Summit Trail to the Slate Creek Trail. We took the Slate Creek trail along a contour to the low pass between Peters Creek and Slate Creek watersheds near the Slate Creek Trail Camp. We continued climbing up Bear Creek Trail heading north on an old road, passing a wrecked 1940's era Oldsmobile as the trail narrowed. At the summit of this climb (about 1450ft), we began a steep descent into the Peters Creek watershed to the old growth stand of redwoods at the confluence of Peters and Bear Creeks. After we ate lunch in the midst of the old redwoods we hiked the short loop through the grove before retracing our steps back up the steep climb on the Bear Creek Trail. After passing the Slate Creek Trail Camp we continued back to the car on the Slate Creek Trail, continuing north after its junction with the Summit Trail and finished the hike by descending the Old Tree Trail. (distance: 12.2 miles; climbing: 2000 feet)

Black Mountain, August 2007 - Stella Hackell, Frank Paysen, Ron Bobb, Alice Mestemacher, my dad (David) and I hiked up the Black Mountain Trail from the Hidden Villa trailhead. We hiked up the Adobe Creek Trail and returned on the Hostel Trail over the summit of Elephant Mountain on the way down. (distance: 10.5 miles; climbing: 2500 feet)

Kumba and Ellie, August 2007 - I visited Laura, Kumba, David Bilsker, Avie, and Ellie in Menlo Park. Most of the photos are puppy-play photos.

Los Trancos Trail, August 2007 - My dad and I met Frank and Stella for an afternoon hike in Foothills Park. Starting from the Orchard Glen picnic area we hiked up the Steep Hollow Trail then joined the Los Trancos Trail for its loop around the back side of the park.

Mothers Day in Santa Cruz, May 2007 - A feast at Dharma's followed by a hike on the Ohlone Bluff Trail at Wilder Ranch. The occasion also doubled as a reunion of sorts with my cousin, Ed, who was staying at Laura's house in Santa Cruz.

Picture Albums from our Trip to Hawaii, April 2007 - This page shows the picture albums taken on our family trip to Hawaii. Areas visited include Waikiki Beach, Diamondhead, the east and north shore of O'ahu, and on Maui: Ka'anapali Shores, 'Iao Valley State Park, Hana Highway, and Haleakala.

Knibbs Knob, December 2006 - Dad and I started in Uvas County Park, south of San Jose and west of Morgan Hill. We hiked up the short but steep Knibbs Knob Trail to the summit of Knibbs Knob, an unremarkable peak with an obscured view. We continued uphill to its westernmost terminus at Mt. Madonna Rd. near Maymens Flat. We then retraced our steps down the steep trail, stopping to enjoy the sun setting over Swanson Creek at the bench along the trail.

Redwood Regional Park, Septmeber 2006 - Zach, Noriko, David, and I hiked a 10-mile loop in Redwood Regional Park east of Oakland. We started at the Canyon Meadow trailhead and hiked up the Stream Trail to the Skyline Gate. We then hiked back on the scenic and hilly French Trail.

Mothers Day in Santa Cruz, May 2006 - A family day trip to visit Laura in Santa Cruz for Mothers Day. We walked along the base of the cliffs and along East Cliff and Opal Cliff Drive to Capitola Beach.

Austin, TX, April 2006 - A business trip to Austin, TX mixed with a little bit of pleasure. Most of the pictures were taken on the Texas Statehouse grounds and on the plane flying back to San Jose. There is also one movie of the exodus of bats from the Congress Ave. bridge.

Singapore, March 2006 - A business trip to Singapore and playing tourist after work. Our group at AMD had their biannual meeting in Singapore this spring, so several of us from Sunnyvale, Austin, and Dresden traveled to Singapore for the week.

Pescadero Beach, December 2005 - A day-trip out to Pescadero Beach with Mom and Dad. Pictures include a walk to the mouth of Pescadero Creek and then back north again to climb the bluff at the north end of the beach. This year we spent some time picking up non-organic trash along the beach.

Mission Peak, December 2005 - Dad and I hiked from the Stanford Ave. trailhead, up the Peak Meadow and Horse Heaven trails and down the Hidden Valley trail. Conditions on the trail were cool and breezy, more so near the summit. Conditions on the ridge and at the summit were cold with gale-force winds. (6.4 miles; 2150 feet climbing)

Last Chance Trail, November 2005 - My parents, Kay and David, and I hiked from the Big Basin Park Headquarters area south along CA236 for about 1/4-mile to Hihn Hammond Rd. that we took to the junction with Last Chance trail. We hiked Last Chance trail down through the East Waddell Creek canyon to the park boundary where the trail becomes a road, and then we retraced our route, making a short-cut by returning past the sewage treatment center instead of climbing the last hill. (5.6 miles; 800 feet climbing)

Black Mountain Trail, September 2005 - Dad and I hiked from the Rhus Ridge Trailhead in Los Altos Hills to the summit of Black Mountain and then back the same way. (9.8 miles; 2500 feet climbing)

North Butano Ridge, Santa Cruz Mountains, August 2005 - We hiked from China Grade Rd. north along Butano Ridge (a.k.a. North Butano Ridge) on the Basin Trail, Butano Ridge Loop Trail, and Butano Ridge Rd. We hiked northwest along the ridge until we reached the first spot with a panoramic view of the Butano Creek watershed, about halfway from China Grade Rd. to Cloverdale Rd., and then we retraced our steps back to the trailhead. (12 miles; 2200 feet climbing)
